FORM GUIDE

Both Pakistan and Ireland have been far from their best in recent times and have also been knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8s.

Pakistan had a disastrous start to their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign as they suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of the USA in the Super Over.

The Green Shirts then succumbed to a frustrating six-run defeat against arch-rivals India in a blockbuster clash, that took place at a jam-packed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 9.

The former champions then finally got on the winning track when they registered a hard-fought seven-wicket victory over Canada, who won one out of three matches they have played thus far.

On the contrary, Ireland are yet to win a match in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. They lost two matches — against Canada and India — while their match against the USA was abandoned without a ball bowled.

FLORIDA: Pakistan’s practice session ahead of their final group-stage fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland could not go ahead due to a wet outfield here at Central Broward Regional Park on Thursday.

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the national team will instead partake in light physical training.

“The Pakistan cricket team will not hold a practice session today in Florida due to a wet outfield. However, the team will attend a light physical training session,” stated PCB.

Former champions Pakistan will lock horns with Ireland in a must-win clash at the aforementioned venue on June 16.

The Babar Azam-led side are currently placed third in Group A standings of the T20 World Cup 2024 with two points in three matches.

Pakistan had a disastrous start to the mega event as they suffered a shocking defeat against the co-host United States of America (USA) in the campaign opener.

The Green Shirts then succumbed to a frustrating six-run defeat against arch-rivals India on June 9 and were pushed on the verge of an early exit from the tournament.

But the 2009 champions regrouped and registered a convincing victory over Canada to taste their first triumph.

In order to qualify for the Super 8s stage of the T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan need to beat Ireland by a decent margin and would also want the USA to lose to the European side.

For the unversed, inaugural champions India have already booked their spot in the Super 8s after a hard-fought victory over USA at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

The Pakistan men’s cricket team on Wednesday reached Florida from New York to play their final group match against Ireland in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The team will take a break and rest in their hotel today, meanwhile training schedule will be announced in due course.

Pakistan are scheduled to face Ireland on June 16 at Central Broward Park Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida. However, there is a 47% chance of rain on that day.

For the unversed, Pakistan registered their first victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 yesterday against Canada.

Set to chase 107, Pakistan amassed the total for the loss of three wickets and 15 balls to spare, courtesy of an anchoring second-wicket partnership between Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

The seven-wicket victory propelled Pakistan to third in Group A standings of the T20 World Cup 2024 with two points in three matches while Canada slipped to fourth due to an inferior net run rate.

Pakistan’s new opening pair of Saim Ayub (6) and Rizwan failed to give them a decent start as the left-handed batter perished in the fifth over with just 20 runs on the board.

Babar then joined Rizwan in the middle and the duo anchored the run chase with a gutsy partnership.

They added 63 runs for the second wicket before Babar fell prey to Dilon Heyliger in the 15th over. He scored a run-a-ball 33 with the help of one boundary and a six.

Rizwan partnered briefly with Fakhar Zaman, who scored just four and perished on the second delivery of the 18th over with just three more required.

Usman Khan then hit the winning runs for Pakistan when he guided one towards the midwicket region for a couple.

Mohammad Rizwan remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with an unbeaten 53 off as many deliveries, hitting three boundaries and a six.

Dilon Heyliger led the bowling charge for Canada with 2/18 while Jeremy Gordon made one scalp.

DUBLIN: Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Babar Azam, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance in the Ireland series and vowed to maintain the same momentum against England.

Pakistan defeated Ireland in the final T20I to clinch the three-match series 2-1, courtesy of Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s swashbuckling half-centuries.

Azam reflected on the team’s performance after the game and appreciated the batters for showing responsibility after the shocking loss in the first match.

“Our team showed improvement during the Ireland series, especially in the batting department,” said the star batter.

He appreciated contributions by the top-order batters Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman, while also showing faith in lower-order batters Iftikhar Ahmed and Azam Khan.

“Rizwan and Fakhar stood out throughout the series, however, the performance by Iftikhar Ahmed and Azam Khan in the lower order has been promising,” he added.

The star-batter also heaped praise on bowlers, especially all-rounder Imad Wasim for his economical spells.

“If we talk more about bowling, Imad Wasim is bowling very well in difficult situations. Amir is playing a perfect role as a senior bowler, while Shaheen Afridi once again proved himself as an outstanding bowler,” he said.

He also expressed optimism for the upcoming four-match T20I series against England and vowed to maintain the same momentum as in the Ireland series.

“You will continue to see positive intent from batters during the England series and we will try to maintain this momentum,” he concluded.

Pakistan and England will square off in the first T20I on May 22 at Headingley, followed by the second match at Edgbaston on May 25.

After the conclusion of the series, the Pakistan team will depart for the United States of America (USA) to participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi lauded the national men’s cricket team for winning the three-match away T20I series against Ireland.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the PCB chair congratulated the Green Shirts on the series victory over Ireland and wished them luck for the upcoming T20I series against England and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

“Congratulations to the Pakistan Cricket team for winning the series against Ireland,” wrote Mohsin Naqvi.

“With teamwork and dedication, you have proven to be the best team in the world.

“Best of luck, boys, for the England series and the World Cup,” he concluded.

Notably, the Babar Azam-led Pakistan recovered from a shock loss in the first T20I and won the remaining two fixtures on the trot to claim a T20I series win after 2021.

In the third and final T20I, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s swashbuckling half-centuries after Shaheen Shah Afridi’s splendid bowling figures of 3/14 led Pakistan to a resounding six-wicket victory over Ireland.

Babar smashed six fours and five sixes on his way to top-score for Pakistan with a quickfire 75 which came off just 42 balls.

Whereas, Mohammad Rizwan scored an anchoring 56. His 38-ball knock featured four fours and three sixes.

Wicketkeeper batter Azam Khan once again gave the final touches to the run chase with a brisk 18-run cameo which included two sixes and a four.

Earlier, Pakistan restricted Ireland to a chasable total despite stand-in captain Lorcan Tucker’s 73, courtesy of Shaheen’s economical bowling figures.

The ace pacer picked up three wickets and gave away just 14 runs in his four overs. His match-winning bowling performance earned him the Player of the Match award.

DUBLIN: Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s swashbuckling half-centuries after Shaheen Shah Afridi’s splendid bowling figures of 3/14 powered Pakistan to a resounding victory over Ireland in a three-match series’ decider on Tuesday.

Set to chase 179, Pakistan comfortably knocked the winning runs for the loss of four wickets and 18 balls to spare, courtesy of a match-winning second-wicket partnership between Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

The touring side, however, had a contrasting start to their pursuit as young opener Saim Ayub failed to make a mark and perished in the third over after scoring 14 off 11 deliveries.

Following the early blow, Babar joined wicketkeeper batter Rizwan in the middle and turned the tide in Pakistan’s favour.

Babar and Rizwan dominated the Ireland bowling attack as both scored half-centuries and put together a marathon 139-run partnership for the second wicket.

Their match-winning stand came to an end in the 15th over when Mohammad Rizwan was bowled by Mark Adair.

Rizwan remained a notable contributor to Pakistan’s total with a brisk 56 off 38 deliveries, peppered with four fours and three sixes.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam, the core aggressor of the stand, fell in the next over after top-scoring for his side with a belligerent 75. His 42-ball knock featured six fours and five sixes.

Pakistan then lost another wicket as Iftikhar Ahmed perished in the next over cheaply.

Later, Azam Khan (18*) and Imad Wasim (1*) ensured that there were no further hiccups in the run chase and took Pakistan over the line with three overs left.

Mark Adair was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland with his three wickets while Craig Young chipped in with a wicket.

The hosts had a shaky start to their innings after being sent into bat first as they lost their opener Ross Adair (7) in the third over with just 15 runs on the board.

Following the early stutter, skipper Lorcan Tucker joined in-form Andy Balbirnie in the middle and launched an astounding recovery.

The duo knitted a brisk 85-run partnership that lasted with Balbirnie’s dismissal off Abbas Afridi in the 11th over.

The right-handed opener scored a brisk 35 off 26 deliveries, hitting two fours and three sixes.

Tucker then put on a brief 32-run partnership with Harry Tector before Imad Wasim provided a much-needed breakthrough to Pakistan in the 14th over by dismissing the Ireland captain.

Lorcan Tucker remained the top-scorer for Ireland with a 41-ball 73, laced up with 13 boundaries and a six.

His dismissal sparked a collapse and Ireland lost four more wickets in quick succession and consequently slipped to 164/7 in 18.3 overs.

But Tector stood his ground firm and carried his bat all the way through with an unbeaten 30 off 20 deliveries with the help of two fours and a six while Graham Hume played an important 10-run cameo.

Shaheen Shah Afridi led the bowling attack for Pakistan with three wickets, followed by Abbas Afridi, who bagged two.

Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, on the other hand, made one scalp apiece.

Pakistan opening batter Saim Ayub has recently revealed how he started playing his trademark ‘no look’ shot.

During a recent interview with a local news channel, the 21-year-old batter shared that the ‘no look’ shot was not planned and just happened unintentionally.

“I think it was the National T20 in 2022 where I played the no look shot for the first time but it was not something that I had pre-planned,” said the young batter.

“I was not able to find scoring options so when I saw that the fine leg was up in the circle, I played that shot. It was not my intention to not look at the shot, it just happened automatically.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

“However, I don’t prioritise this since it is a high-risk shot. I try to play the other shots more often and only play the no-look shot when it is absolutely necessary,”

Saim Ayub also stated that he doesn’t aim for personal milestones, but instead strives to play his best and contribute to the team’s success.

“My target is Man of the Match, not fifty or a hundred. I don’t think about numbers as I aim to win the match for my team. It can be any figure, 50, 70 or 100, but I don’t think about that since I’m focused on winning the match,”

The young batter has represented Pakistan in 19 T20Is since making his debut against Afghanistan last year, scoring 270 runs at a strike rate of 131.06.

Former Pakistan Test cricketer Ramiz Raja raised concerns over the poor form of opening batter Saim Ayub and Pakistan’s pace bowlers in the Ireland series.

Speaking at his YouTube channel, Ramiz Raja questioned the effectiveness of Saim Ayub in the opening spot for the Men in Green as he stressed consistency and reliability at the top of the order.

“I don’t think Saim Ayub gives you security, he shows flashes of brilliance. If you don’t score 50 off 30 balls then breaking Rizwan and Babar’s opening duo doesn’t make any sense,” Raja said.

On the dismal run of Pakistan’s bowling lineup in the Ireland series, he said that Pakistani bowlers conceded 200 runs against Ireland which was a worrying sign before the T20 World Cup 2024.

“They conceded 200 runs against Ireland and it seemed as if our bowlers were behind, If they had taken the catches of Rizwan and and Zaman it would have become difficult for Pakistan to chase the target,” Ramiz Raja said.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

According to Ramiz Raja, the Pakistani pace bowlers lacked consistency since the previous year’s World Cup in India.

“Pakistan’s top bowlers giving away so many runs against Ireland, then it will become hard for the team in future. Pakistan’s forte, and success are based on the bowlers, especially pacers, they have been struggling since last year’s World Cup in India. Two balls are good and then three deliveries are bad, this makes the situation tough,” he added.

While the Greenshirts won the second game of the three-match T20 series against Ireland, Pakistani bowlers conceded 193 and managed to take seven wickets.

The series is level with one apiece as Ireland won the first match of the series.
