KARACHI: West Indies women’s captain Hayley Matthews claimed 3-25, followed by her 11th T20I half-century to lead her side to a seven-wicket win over Pakistan in the second T20I at National Bank Stadium here on Sunday.

Matthews, during the 122-run chase, got off to a good start but she lost her opening partner Qiana Joseph in the fourth over.

Shemaine Campbelle joined Matthews and together they knitted a solid 67-run stand for the second wicket to keep West Indies in command of the run-chase.

Matthews was dismissed by Sadia Iqbal after she scored 58 runs from 43 balls, which featured ten boundaries.

Tuba Hassan then castled Campbelle (21) with 95 runs on the board in 14.4 overs.

Chedean Nation (17) and Chinelle Henry (8) then joined hands to form an unbeaten 29-run stand, leading West Indies to victory with ten balls to spare.

For Pakistan, Iqbal, Hassan and Diana Baig managed one wicket each.

Earlier, Pakistan women opted to bat first but could not get the desired start as Sidra Ameen fell inside four overs with 23 runs on the board.

Muneeba Ali joined Gull Feroza and constructed a cautious one-sided partnership of 29 runs before the latter went back to the pavilion.

Ali was then joined by captain Nida Dar (13) and they added 41 runs for the third wicket, but could not increase the scoring rate courtesy of West Indies’ impressive bowling.

Ali top-scored for Pakistan with 55 runs from 47 balls with the help of five boundaries before falling prey to Hayley Matthews in the last over.

None of the lower-order batters could reach the double-figure as Ayesha Zafar remained unbeaten at nine off 10 balls.

Pakistan women accumulated 121-7 in their allocated 20 overs.

Matthews led the bowling for West Indies with figures of 3-25, while Chinelle Henry, Karishma Ramharack and Afy Fletcher managed one wicket each.

While chasing 270, Pakistan bundled out for 156 in 35.5 overs, succumbing to a 113-run loss.

The hosts had a shaky start as they slipped to 24-2 in five overs before Muneeba Ali and the captain Nida Dar (19) constructed a 35-run stand to stabilize the chase.

However, Matthews removed her Pakistani counterpart to break the partnership with 59 runs on the board.

Ali was then departed courtesy of a run-out after scoring 22 off 33 with a solitary boundary.

Aliya Riaz (16) and Fatima Sana (10) were then involved in a brief 28-run partnership before Afy Fletcher removed both batters in consecutive overs.

Najiha Alvi (20) and Tuba Hassan’s partnership of 37 off 38 pushed the team’s total to 137 but Zaida James dismissed the latter to apply brakes.

Hassan top-scored for Pakistan with 25 runs from 23 balls, featuring two boundaries.

Alvi fell prey to Matthews before the Pakistan team bundled out for 156 as James got Sadia Iqbal’s wicket.

Matthews topped the bowling charts with the figures of 3-17, while James and Fletcher contributed with two wickets each.

Earlier, Matthews decided to bat first against Pakistan after winning the toss, but the hosts drew first blood as Rashada Williams fell prey to Sadia Iqbal in the third over.

Shemaine Campbelle joined her skipper and together they knitted a solid 102-run partnership to push the team’s total to 103 inside 24 overs.

Tuba Hassan brought the Pakistan women’s team back into the match, breaking the partnership, followed by another wicket in the next over to reduce West Indies to 106-3.

Campbelle went back to the pavilion after scoring a cautious 45-run knock from 71 balls with the help of four boundaries.

Matthews led from the front and took charge against Pakistan bowlers, while wickets kept falling from the other end.

The skipper was involved in notable partnerships of 40 and 42 runs with Chinelle Henry (23) and Aaliyah Alleyne (17) respectively.

However, none of the batters could pose much threat to Pakistan bowlers, while Matthews remained unfazed and completed his fifth ODI century.

She carried her bat through the innings and registered her highest individual score of 140 off 150, which featured 15 boundaries and one six.

Meanwhile, Karishma Ramharack also remained unbeaten at five as West Indies scored 269-8 in their allocated 50 overs.

Sadia Iqbal and Tuba Hassan led Pakistan’s bowling attack with two wickets, while Nida Dar and Nashra Sandhu picked one wicket each.

West Indies women’s cricket team will arrive in Karachi on 14 April to play three ODIs against Pakistan women’s team.

These ODIs will be part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 and five T20Is.

All eight matches will be played at the National Bank Stadium.

In the ODI series, former Test batter and member of the PCB and ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees Ali Naqvi will lead the playing control team, while Muhammad Javed, also part of the PCB and ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees will lead the playing control team in T20I series.

Alongside Polosak, Abdul Moqeet, Imran Jawed and Nasir Hussain – all part of the PCB Elite Panel of Umpires will serve as on-field umpires during the ODI series.

Saleema Imtiaz and Humairah Farah, both part of the PCB Women’s Panel of Umpires will be the reserve umpires for the ODI series.

The women’s national selection committee led by Saleem Jaffar has named 20 probables for the forthcoming white-ball series scheduled to take place at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi from 18 April to 3 May.

The series includes three ODIs – part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 and five T20Is.

The first ball in the ODIs (18, 21 and 23 April) will be bowled at 3:30 pm, while the T20Is (26, 28, 30 April, 2 and 3 May) will begin at 7:30 pm.

Ayesha Zafar (29 ODIs, 20 T20Is), Gul Feroza (2 ODIs), Rameen Shamim (3 ODIs, 4T20Is), Sidra Nawaz (67 ODIs, 56 T20Is) and Tuba Hassan (1 ODI, 21 T20Is) are the players making a comeback.

Omaima Sohail and Shawaal Zulfiqar (recovering from a shoulder injury), who were part of the 17-member squad that was named for the last bilateral series against the New Zealand women’s team, have been omitted from the camp probables.

The selection committee in consultation with the captain and interim head coach will announce the 15-member squad for the ODI series during the camp in Karachi.

The remaining five players of the probables camp will be released to take part in the domestic Women’s One-Day Tournament (to be announced in due course).

“The selection committee has chosen 20 probable players based on their performances in both domestic and international circuits,” said Chief Selector Saleem Jaffar.

“Ayesha Zafar, Gul Feroza, Rameen Shamim, Sidra Nawaz, and Tuba Hassan have been added to the probables camp following their performances in the last domestic event, as we aim to broaden our pool of players.

“The upcoming series against West Indies, which includes ICC Women’s Championship matches, is of utmost importance as we strive to earn maximum points to strengthen our claim for direct qualification in the ICC Women’s 50-over World Cup.”

The 20-member squad will assemble in Karachi on Monday, 1 April and will undergo a seven-day camp in Karachi from 2 April at the Hanif Mohammad High-Performance Centre. The squad members and the team management will return to their hometown on 9 April for Eid and the squad will assemble again in Karachi on 13 April.

West Indies are scheduled to arrive in Karachi on 14 April to feature in eight white-ball matches, including three ODIs, which are part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25.

The three ODI matches will be played at the National Bank Stadium (NBS) in Karachi on 18, 21 and 23 April.

The ODI series will be followed by five T20Is, to be played at the same venue on starting from 26 April.

The ODIs are set to begin at 330pm PKT, while the first ball in the T20Is will be bowled at 730pm PKT.

Pakistan women’s team are currently ranked third in the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25, securing 16 points from 18 matches, whereas the West Indies women’s team are positioned at number nine with eight points from 12 outings.

In the ICC Women’s T20I rankings, Pakistan are placed at eighth position, while West Indies occupy the sixth spot.

The forthcoming West Indies women’s team tour to Pakistan will be their second tour since 2021. West Indies last visited Karachi in November 2021 and featured in three ODIs.

The upcoming ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 series will also be the fourth series hosted at home by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Set to chase 117, Pakistan fell three runs short as the green shirts could amass 113/5 in the allotted overs despite Aliya’s fighting 29.

The green shirts were off to a dismal start to the run chase as the side lost both openers – Muneeba Ali and Sidra Ameen – for a mere 15 runs in the third over.

Following the slump, skipper Bismah Maroof and Nida Dar attempted to anchor the run chase with a crucial third-wicket partnership that saw the pair adding 44 runs.

The duo of Bismah and Dar, however, remained a touch too slow amid the crucial stand as they conceded 53 deliveries Afy Fletcher dismissed Dar, who could score 27 off 31 deliveries and hit a boundary.

Bismah then put on yet another crucial partnership for her side as she added 30 runs with Aliya before perishing in the 18th over after scoring 26 off 33 deliveries.

Skipper Bisma’s dismissal put Aliya under immense pressure, who had to bat with tailender Fatima Sana when the side needed 18 off the final over.

Aliya, however, kept Pakistan’s hopes alive with three boundaries in the over but her dismissal on the fifth delivery powered West Indies to run away with a narrow three-run triumph.

As per the latest development, the decision was made in light of the teams’ preparations for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, which will be held in the West Indies and the USA.

“The decision has been made considering 2024 is an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup year, with the event due to be hosted in the West Indies and the USA in June 2024, and the shortest format matches will, therefore, help both sides to prepare for the tournament,” the PCB stated.

The three-match T20I series in January 2023 is not part of the recently announced 2023-2027 ICC Future Tours Programme.

The West Indies played their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches against Pakistan in Multan in May 2022, while the December 2021 series comprised three T20Is in Karachi.
